It is not the fear of punishment, or the hope of everlasting reward, that leads the disciples of Christ to follow Him. They behold the Saviour's matchless love, revealed throughout His pilgrimage on earth, from the manger of Bethlehem to Calvary's cross, and the sight of Him attracts, it softens and subdues the soul. Love awakens in the heart of the beholders. They hear His voice, and they follow Him.  (The Desire of Ages, p. 480)

Are you finding that the legalistic motivations of hope of reward or fear of punishment, just aren’t working to improve your quality of living or filling the void in your life? Here is what you need to know, “One steadfast look to the Saviour uplifted upon the cross will do more to purify the mind and heart from every defilement than will all the scientific explanations by the ablest tongue.  (Lift Him Up, p. 297)

I found that while I was motivated by a hope of reward or fear of punishment that I was still in Satan’s grasp. Satan was offering me rewards for doing evil, and threatened me with punishment for doing what was right! Then I found a motivation for doing what is right that Satan simply could not work with, because he knew absolutely nothing about it. What is this motivation? Love! Now, instead of being motivated to do what is right for hope of reward or to escape punishment, we simply are not concerned about the consequences either way, as “The love of Christ constraineth us!" Our focus is no longer on self but on Jesus and His love. By falling in love with Jesus we raise all the standards of the law, but throw away all the useless legalism!
